Uwe Schmidt, aka Atom Heart, modern laptop legend and king of the pseudonym, has been lost in the Chilean wilderness for the last eight years, despite keeping up a busy release schedule on Raster-Noton, Rather Interesting, and many other labels.
We coaxed the prolific German producer over to the 2004 Red Bull Music Academy to talk about living and breathing Latin American music, finally getting to a place where you can re-interpret Kraftwerk, the deep science of the cover version, his Japanese approach to collaboration, the rapid process of electronic music definition and the subsequent and irritating result of classification.

The Red Bull Music Academy is a global music institution committed to fostering creativity in music. We celebrate music, its culture, and the transformative minds behind it. Begun in 1998, the Academy has taken the core principles that underlie its annual workshop for selected participants and applied this curatorial approach to events, lectures, and city-wide festivals throughout the year.
