CelloChat with Jennifer Kloetzel, live from San Francisco, CA

A graduate of The Juilliard School and a Fulbright Scholar, cellist JENNIFER KLOETZEL has concertized throughout the United States, Europe and Asia as a soloist and chamber musician. A founding member of the San Francisco-based Cypress String Quartet (1996-2016), Ms. Kloetzel has toured the globe and performed at such renowned venues as Lincoln Center, the Kennedy Center for the Performing Arts, the Chautauqua Institute and the Ravinia Festival, the Lobkowicz Palaces in both Vienna and Prague, as well as prominent colleges and conservatories worldwide.

Ms. Kloetzel is noted for her elegant playing and her vibrant tone. She is a sought-after recitalist, performing concerts for San Francisco Performances and on WQXR in New York. Strad Magazine hailed, “Cellist Jennifer Kloetzel is impressively passionate…” A fervent champion of new music, she has received the Copland Award for her work with living American Composers and has commissioned and premiered over fifty works, including five concertos written specifically for her. In the past few seasons, premieres included a Cello Suite by Daniel Asia, a Cello Concerto, “Cloud Atlas” and two unaccompanied cello works “Lift” and “Cricket the Fiddler,” which were both written for her by MIT composer Elena Ruehr and a Cello Sonata dedicated to her by Joseph Landers. The San Jose Mercury News proclaimed, “Cellist Jennifer Kloetzel shines in premiere” and called her a “terrific soloist…with a robust and earthy sound.” Ms. Kloetzel has recorded the Ruehr Cello Concerto with the Boston Modern Orchestra Project, which was released to critical acclaim in October 2014. “Lift” is the title track of an all-Ruehr disc, released on the Avie label, and was included on Keith Powers’ 13 Best Classical Music Recordings of 2016. Ms. Kloetzel is the featured cellist on a 2019 Albany Records release of music by Richard Aldag, and recently premiered Lee Actor’s Cello Concerto, written for her in 2017. Upcoming world premieres include sonatas by Richard Aldag and Elena Ruehr and “Inferno: Double Concerto for Viola, Cello and Chamber Orchestra” by Joel Friedman, as well as six ‘companion’ pieces for solo cello commissioned by Ms. Kloetzel to pair with the Bach Cello Suites.

Ms. Kloetzel is winner of The Juilliard School’s top award, the “Peter Mennin Prize for Outstanding Leadership and Achievement in Music,” and a Presser Music Award, as well as a Fulbright Grant to England. In 2004 she was honored with the McGraw-Hill Companies’ “Robert Sherman Award for Music Education and Community Outreach” in recognition of years of outreach work in schools and community centers. She has appeared at the Santa Fe Chamber Music Festival, the Sarasota and Aspen Music Festivals, the Britten-Pears School, the Prague Mozart Academy, and performed as cellist of the Cassatt Quartet during the 1995-96 season. From 2003-2009, Ms. Kloetzel taught cello and chamber music at San José State University, where the Cypress String Quartet was Ensemble-in-Residence. She has given master classes at The Juilliard School, San Francisco Conservatory and at universities throughout the U.S.

Growing up near Baltimore, Ms. Kloetzel began her cello studies at age six. Her teachers included Aldo Parisot, William Pleeth, Harvey Shapiro, Stephen Kates and Paula (Virizlay) Skolnick, as well as members of the Juilliard String Quartet, the Amadeus Quartet and the Cleveland Quartet. After performing with pianist Andre Previn at the La Jolla Chamber Music Festival, Ms. Kloetzel was invited to appear as one of his select “Rising Stars” for two seasons at the Caramoor Festival in New York.

Ms. Kloetzel has been featured regularly on National Public Radio’s “Performance Today” as both a soloist and a chamber musician and her performances have been broadcast on radio stations from coast to coast. A passionate recording artist with 36 CD releases to date, recent recordings include the entire cycle of Beethoven Quartets and Brahms Sextets on the Avie label. In 2021, Avie will release her recordings of Beethoven’s complete works for cello and piano with Robert Koenig. She performed as principal cellist of the Concert Artists of Baltimore, the Baltimore Opera and the Juilliard Orchestra under Maestro Kurt Masur. In addition, she is a frequent soloist with orchestras throughout the United States, performing works by Beethoven, Brahms, Dvořák, Elgar, Glazunov, Fauré, Ibert, Haydn, Hindemith, Lalo, Saint-Saëns, Shostakovich, Strauss, and Walton. In 2016, Ms. Kloetzel was invited to join the faculty at University of California Santa Barbara, where she serves as Professor of Cello and Head of Strings.

Debbie just hit the wall
She never had it all
One Prozac a day
Husband’s a CPA
Her dreams went out the door
When she turned twenty four
Only been with one man
What happened to her plan?

She was gonna be an actress
She was gonna be a star
She was gonna shake her ass
On the hood of Whitesnake’s car
Her yellow SUV is now the enemy
Looks at her average life
And nothing has been alright since

Bruce Springsteen, Madonna
Way before Nirvana
There was U2 and Blondie
And music still on MTV
Her two kids in high school
They tell her that she’s uncool
Cause she’s still preoccupied

SoLaTiMusic: Tell me – 360 Ambisonic VR Spatialized Music

Enjoy this experimental VR-video of Phonic Chat. For best quality use smart devices and headphones!
360 Music Video with Spatialized Audio

SoLaTiMusic is a band from Hungary founded by Árpád Oláh Tzumo one of the most talented Hungarian jazz-piano players. SoLaTi goes beyond borders when it comes to musical expression. They mix very modern sounds and beats with jazz in their songs. The high-level instrumentality and vocals are in focus while they perform live. Kriszta Pocsai, who is the singer and also co-creates the songs with Tzumo, is among the greatest jazz-singers of Hungary.

This is an acoustic cover version of the song for piano, double bass, drums and vocal.

music by Árpád Oláh Tzumo
lyrics by Kriszta Pocsai
covered by Kriszta Pocsai, Árpád Oláh Tzumo, Tibor Fonay, Ambrus Richter

The song was chosen for reinterpretation at the 3. Phonic Chat Workshop. The idea is that an original song of the participants is chosen and the musicians who meet at this cast for the first time rearrange it during a live session. The audience can be a part of the production process online.
About the musicians:

Kriszta Pocsai:

According to many people’s opinion Christina Pocsai has the most beautifully singing Hungarian singer. She works together with the extremely talented Árpád Oláh Tzumo in the formation SoLaTiMusic. They brought their own song to rearrange it at our 3. Phonic Chat Workshop. Christa Pocsai studied at the jazz singing faculty of the Ferenc Liszt Music Art College and she has worked together with such legendary partners like Béla Szakcsi Lakatos, Rudolf Tomsits. We could hear her sing with Balázs Bágyi, György Orbán, András Lakatos, Viktor Tóth, Árpád Tzumo. She works with SoLaTiMusic and with her own quartet now.
She also works as a logopedist, singing teacher and sound therapist.
She has an excellent personality, and I’m honoured to get to know her and work together!

Árpád Oláh Tzumo:

Árpád Oláh Tzumo is one of the few Hungarian jazz artist who can tell about himself that he had the chance to study at Berklee and the Thelonious Monk Institute in Los Angeles. He had the opportunity to study from such jazz giants like Herbie Hancock, Ron Carter or Terence Blanchard. The jazz-pianist moved back to Hungary in 2008 and won numerous international awards.
He plays with his own band SoLaTiMusic, and in a trio with Ferenc Németh and Greg Tarty.
We were honored to have him at the Phonic Chat Workshop.

Tibor Fonay:

Tibor Fonay studied at the Ferenc Liszt Hungarian Music Academy. He is an outstanding contrabass and bass player, he regularly works together with Péter Sárik, Bálint Gyémánt, Károly Binder. He has also won the award of the JazzMa professional portal and the Prima Primissima Junior Award. He was interested in music from an early age and experimented with several genres from punk rock to funk. His philosophy is that you can get to know your instrument by playing in multiple styles and genres. He likes to play with several different formations from different genres.
He plays the contrabass at this session.

Ambrus Richter:

Ambrus Richter is from the very young generation of the Hungarian jazz scene. We can see him play with several prestigious formations though he is still learning jazz-drum playing. He started his studies in 2014.
His inspirations are:

Led Zeppelin, a Doors, Frank Zappa and the Hungarian folk music, classical music and Hungarian bands like Tamás Cseh, Balaton, Kontroll Csoport, A. E. Bizottság.
Then he met with the jazz genre: John Coltrane Quartet Johnny Griffin, Michael Brecker, Brian Blade, Jeff Tain Watts, Joshua Redman, Kenny Garrett, Christian McBride, Joe Henderson, Dexter Gordon, Wayne Shorter, Kenny Kirkland, etc. And the Hungarian names like: Viktor Tóth Tercett, Dresch Quartet, Mihály Borbély, Gábor Gadó, Gábor Winand, János Ávéd, Elemér Balázs, Krisztián Oláh, György Orbán, Péter Rozsnyói, László Csízi, Dani Serei, Tamás Czirják, Attila Gyárfás, Kornél Fekete-Kovács, Dávid Hodek. He plays the drums in this rearrangement of Tell me.

Tell me

verse 1.
Still longing for you, I really do
but there’s nothing I’d rather do
there were times I thought you want me too
can’t read the signs, I was so sure of you

Tell me that you feel no pressure
Tell me I could trust in you
I wanna be a little better
maybe it’ll help me through

I remember in September
when my love was new
hardly heard that (what) all my friends said
I got it bad for you
I remember in September
yes my love was new
now is summer, different color
and the sky is blue

Production team:
László Kiss G.: art director
Kinga Tamás – manager
Attila Ignácz – sound and lights
Gergő Máté – design
Krisztina Simonné Silman – logistics
Dénes Poór – producer
